WHAT IS FUNGAL NAIL?

Fungal nail infections (onychomycosis) are widespread and more likely to impact us the older we get on. The fungus can affect some or all of the nail and gradually worsen over time, becoming thicker with a yellow and brown colour. The presence of fungus visually alters the appearance of the toenail, becoming thicker with a brownish discolouration.

Traditional treatments usually involve lacquers applied directly to the nail. While results can vary, it is notoriously difficult to treat with this method once the infection has established. An alternative option is to take oral medication, presenting the risk of side effects.

Laser Fungal Nail Treatment Process

Stage 1 - Initial Assessment & Fungal Nail Test (Optional)

In many cases, the presence of fungal nail infection is immediately apparent. Where it is not, a fungal nail test is recommended, which will confirm (or disprove) the diagnosis.

The test can be conducted within any pre-booked 30-minute appointment with our podiatrist and is subject to an additional £50 fee.

Please note the appointment is priced at £40, making the total rate £90.

Step 2 - Pathology Test Results

Scientifically proven to be the fastest and most accurate fungal nail diagnosis tool. We will remove a small sample of the nail (completely painless) to test. Results will be given during the initial assessment.

If positive, we will recommend the laser nail therapy to treat the fungus. There is zero obligation to proceed.

If the results don’t indicate the presence of a fungal nail infection, we will advise on the alternate treatments specific to your condition.

Step 3 - First Laser Treatment Session

Photographs will be taken of the relevant nails so that a comparison can be made as treatment progresses. The nails are cut and any thickening filed down.

The laser is passed over the nail several times, the nail will gradually warm-up and heat might be felt. A cream will be applied that will help stop reinfection.

Step 4 - Follow Up Sessions

The success and rate of which the laser therapy will treat the fungus varies per person.

For some, if the infection has been identified early, a single laser nail treatment session can be enough. For others, a course of several follow-ups maybe required.

Fungal Nail Laser Treatment Prices

It is impossible to tell until we begin with the treatment how many laser treatments will be required. Based on experience, a moderate fungal infection can be treated with 3 sessions, however, more severe conditions can take up to 12-15 sessions before the desired results are achieved.

For the treatment of more than one nail, Deborah will provide a clear cost during your consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes fungal nail infection?

Warm moist conditions provide the breeding grounds for fungus in the toe, which feeds off the protein keratin in the nail.

Statistics show that over 50% of people aged 70 plus have a form of fungal in their nails.

How long do the results take?

To see results from the laser treatment it takes 5-6 months for the nail to grow completely from bottom to top but results can generally be seen in 8 weeks following the first treatment as the fungal free nail emerges from the nail bed.

Does the laser treatment hurt?

No. You will feel a warm sensation but nothing more.

How many laser sessions will I need?

It is impossible to tell until we begin with the treatment. Based on experience, a moderate fungal infection can be treated within 2 sessions, however, more severe conditions can take up to 6 sessions before the desired results are achieved.

Will I be out of action after laser treatment?

No. All regular activities can be resumed post treatment.

Laser Therapy Feedback

cycling-podiatry-testimonial

As a professional cyclist my feet are under a tremendous amount of stress. Following endurance training my feet would be painful. Nothing I did took the pain away from the arches of my feet. I was desperate. Deborah agreed to see me at her clinic. I was assessed and prescribed orthotics. One pair for my cycle shoes and one pair for everyday wear. 6 weeks later, I cycled 400 miles at racing speed over 4 days. I was completely pain free.

Plantar Fasciitis Treatment Bradford

Plantar Fasciitis is a very painful condition which has made it impossible for me to walk any distance without having a great deal of pain. Deborah explained that it was non-invasive and that it would stimulate my body to speed up the healing process in the tendons I had damaged in May.

After the seventh treatment I was able to walk at home and in the garden for more prolonged times without pain, only twinges now and again. The eighth treatment continued this progress and I was able to be on my feet for longer periods without pain.
